Police officer who adopted heroin addict’s baby will be one of Trump’s SOTU guests

The Albuquerque police officer who adopted a heroin addict’s baby will be among President Donald Trump’s special guests at Tuesday’s State of the Union address in Washington, D.C.

What is the officer’s story?

Officer Ryan Holets, 27, discovered a young couple shooting up while on duty in September while responding to a call for a possible convenience store theft. When Holets approached the couple, he realized that the woman was with child.

The woman, 35-year-old Crystal Champ, was approximately eight months pregnant and addicted to drugs.

“It’s not every day I see a sight like that and it just made me really sad,” he told CNN.

During their exchange, Champ told Holets that she was looking for someone to adopt her unborn child.

Holets didn’t charge the couple with possession. Instead, he did something that would forever change all of their lives. He showed Champ a photo of his family — his wife and four children. Then he offered to adopt her baby.

“I was led by God to take the chance,” Holets told CNN. “God brought us all together. I really don’t have any other way to explain it.”

A month later, Champ gave birth to a daughter that the Holets named Hope.

What did Holets say about the invitation?

Holets, according to CNN in an article published Monday, said that he grappled with realizing he’d be in attendance at Trump’s State of the Union address.

“We have entered the twilight zone for sure,” he said.

According to the outlet, the Trump administration aims to use Holets’ experience to underscore the administration’s war on opioid abuse in the U.S.

Holets told the Albuquerque Journal for an article published on Monday that he’s filled with gratitude at being able to attend the address.

“It’s a great honor to be invited to the White House and be able to meet the president,” he said. “It’s just something I would never turn down.”
